In the past Veli Losinj was the major settlement on the island with agriculture and fishery as the main sources of income.
The village had a shipyard, one of the oldest in the Adriatic. Their fleet sailed all over the world and their captains were highly regarded in every port.
Austro- Hungarian crown prince was a frequent visitor, taking refuge in his winter retret surrounded by a botanical garden known for its collection of trees brought back from all over the world.
Due to this the island has a century long tradition in tourism.
